How long does windshield replacement take?
"How long does it take?" is one of the top questions before booking, mostly because people are trying to figure out whether to wait, drop off, or take an Uber home. The honest answer is: the install itself is shorter than people expect, but the urethane cure time means you'll be without the vehicle for 2-3 hours regardless.
The install itself
For most vehicles, a skilled technician does a windshield replacement in 60-90 minutes. The steps:
- Cover the dashboard, defroster vents, and any wiring (5 min)
- Remove wipers, cowl panel, A-pillar trim (10 min)
- Cut out the old windshield with a cold knife or wire (15 min)
- Clean and prep the pinch weld where the glass mounts (10 min)
- Prime the pinch weld and the new glass edges (5 min)
- Apply urethane bead, set the new glass, press to seat (10 min)
- Reinstall trim, wipers, cowl panel (10 min)
- Verify cameras seated, sensor connections, mirror reattached (5 min)
Total: ~70 minutes for an experienced tech on a familiar vehicle. Add time for tight-tolerance European or EV installs (BMW, Mercedes, Tesla can run 90-120 minutes).
ADAS calibration adds 30-90 minutes
If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera (most 2018+), calibration is required after the install and adds significant time:
- Dynamic calibration: 20-30 minutes for the road test plus 10 minutes of scan-tool setup. Done on the spot.
- Static calibration: 30-60 minutes setting up the target board and running the calibration routine. Done in a shop bay.
- Both: 60-90 minutes total.
For mobile service on a vehicle that needs static calibration, the install happens at your location, then you (or the mobile tech) drives the vehicle to a shop for the calibration. Plan extra time.
Safe drive-away time
Urethane is the adhesive that holds the windshield in place. It cures over time as it reacts with humidity in the air. The "safe drive-away time" is the minimum cure time before the windshield can reliably support an airbag deployment or roof rollover.
For most modern urethanes used by reputable shops in the KC metro, the safe drive-away time is 60 minutes at typical conditions (60-80°F, normal humidity). In cold weather (below 40°F) or very low humidity, cure time can stretch to 2-3 hours. Your shop will tell you specifically — and they're held to the urethane manufacturer's spec.
Total time from drop-off to drive-off:
- Non-ADAS vehicle: install (75 min) + cure (60 min) = 2 hours 15 min
- ADAS dynamic-only: install (75 min) + cure (60 min) + dynamic calibration during cure = 2 hours 15 min
- ADAS static: install (75 min) + cure (60 min) + calibration (45 min) = 3 hours
What you can't do for the first 24 hours
After the safe drive-away time, you can drive normally. But for the first 24 hours, there are a few precautions:
- Don't run the vehicle through a car wash. Pressurized water can disturb the not-yet-fully-cured urethane bead.
- Don't slam doors. The pressure wave through the cabin pushes outward against the new glass.
- Leave a window cracked. Same reason — prevent pressure spikes.
- Don't remove the retention tape. If the tech left blue tape along the edges, leave it for 24 hours to keep the trim in place while cure completes.
- Avoid extreme temperature changes. Don't park in direct sun if you can avoid it during the first day, and don't blast the defroster.
After 24 hours, the urethane is fully cured and the windshield behaves like the original factory install.
Scheduling tips
Most shops in the KC metro can schedule a windshield replacement within 2-5 business days. Same-day or next-day service is often available for non-ADAS vehicles. Glass for less common luxury or EV models sometimes needs to be ordered, adding 1-3 days.
If you have insurance, the shop can usually verify coverage and schedule on the same call. If you're going mobile, the tech blocks a 3-hour window in your calendar and confirms a parking location.
